The Landes has the largest cultivated forest in Europe – generally flat, with some hilliness in the south. The department is perfect for outdoor recreation, and the Parc Naturel Régional des Landes de Gascogne in the north of the department will help to preserve the area's ecological balance for the future. It is possible to find some completely secluded properties for sale at comparatively modest prices deep in the pine forests– although these may be some way from the only fair sized towns, Mont-de-Marsan and Dax.
Mont-de-Marsan is a busy town with important air-force base and good out-of-town shopping facilities.
Dax is fashionable and historic town, and dynamic thermal cure resort.
The coastal resorts and areas within a few kilometres of the coast are a very French phenomenon, where property for sale, including building land, is expensive, and beaches and camp-sites are really busy in the summer.
