French vineyard properties for sale

Vineyard Properties

Aquitaine is the largest fine wine growing area in the world, and the figures are compelling:

  • 145 000 hectares of vines - that's about 550 square miles
  • average annual production 7,9 millions hectolitres – that's one billion bottles
  • over 100 different appellations d'origine contrôlée
  • 21,800 viticultural properties
  • 65 viticultural cooperatives
  • 400 wine négociants
  • 66,000 people working in the sector
  • added value of 2.4 billion euros of which 30% is generated by exports.

Of course the Bordeaux area comes top of the list with its many excellent ageworthy wines. However, other areas in the region (e.g. Bergerac and Buzet) are up-and-coming and product quality is usually on a par with that of a mid-range Bordeaux.

See the map of Aquitaine vineyards to identify where the wine growing areas are. If you are looking for a vineyard property to buy, this will enable you to narrow down your search area.

In recent years world over-supply has taken its toll on the sector and producers have had to learn hard lessons in marketing. Notwithstanding these trials and tribulations, the perennial demand for quality wine ensures that the Aquitaine's wine growers are kept busy.

Vineyard properties come up for sale, but for various reasons these sales are not always widely publicised. We are fortunate that several of our agents commerciaux have extensive contacts in the world of wine-growing, and this enables us not only to keep a representative portfolio of vineyard properties for sale, but also to deal with any specific enquiries that you may have.

By their very nature vineyard properties are attractive propositions for the buyer who is looking for a home in a peaceful environment. Often the principal residence is one of character and standing. However, buying a vineyard is not for the faint-hearted as it involves detailed negotiations on questions of the property, personnel, equipment, stock etc. You also have to be conversant with viniculture and wine-making techniques, as well as the rules and regulations governing this activity, and we can point you in the right direction for specialist advisers and notaires. If you do not want to look after the cultivation and production yourself, then the vines can be let out to another viticulteur to look after the vines and make the wine (this is called 'fermage'), so you can enjoy life in your own vineyard and the wine produced from your vines without the hard work.

We have vineyard properties for sale in many of the regional appellations. The reputation of each appellation is paramount and prices for vines vary accordingly - anything from 10,000 euros to 620,000 euros per hectare.
